Aires de Tenerife: una realidad local y global programme in Garachico

The municipality of la Villa and Puerto de Garachico will receive the programme Aires de Tenerife: una realidad local y global from the 14th to the 20th of April. This scientific dissemination programme for all the municipalities of the island, is aimed to increase the awareness of the island´s residents about the emission of pollutant gases to the atmosphere, Air quality and Climate Change.

Up to the date, the municipalities of Garachico, Adeje, Arico, Arona, Fasnia, Garachico, Granadilla Guia de Isora, Icod de los Vinos, La Guancha, La Laguna, Los Silos, Santa Ursula, Santiago del Teide and Tegueste have joined this initiative. This educational program is materialized through the interest of the participating municipalities and the TENAIR 2010: project, which is financed by the Employment and Development Projects Area of Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.

Within the frame of this programme and during seven days, a mobile unit used to monitor and measure the atmospheric pollutants (SO2, CO, O3, CO2, NOx and PM10 particles), will be installed in the Adolfo Suarez Avenue. Along with this, the exhibition "Climate Change: Impacts, Causes and Solutions" of the Environmental Ministry, consisting of 17 posters about air pollution, rational use of energy, energy conservation and global Climate Change, will be shown in the ex-convent of San Francisco with 4 other posters about air quality and the atmospheric monitoring program in the Canary Islands and about the work that ITER undertakes in this area.

On Monday, the 20th of April from 09:00 to 12:00 hours there will be guided visits organized into the mobile units, including one equipped with COSPEC remote optical sensors that ITER has to the evaluation of the emission and inmission of atmospheric pollutants in the island of Tenerife. At 12:00 a.m. a lecture will be given on pollutant gases emission, Air Quality and Climate Change for the scholar community in the ex-convent of San Francisco.

The educational program "Aires de Tenerife: una realidad local y global" will be given throughout this year and aims to be a contribution of the island"s municipalities involved, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and ITER, to the dissemination and implementation of the objectives of the Planet Earth´s Year; a major international statement by the General Assembly of the United Nations in its plenary session on December 22nd, 2005. The main purpose of this statement, whose activities fall in the period 2007-09, is to make the society aware of the relationship between Humanity and Planet Earth.
